The uncontrolled gender pay gap, which takes the median earnings of women to men without controlling for various compensable factors, is $0.82 for every $1.00 a man makes. The controlled gender pay gap, which controls for job title, years of experience, education, industry, location and other compensable factors, is $0.98 for every $1.00 a man makes, meaning that women are still making less than men even when doing the exact same job.
Join us for this Q&A panel featuring women in tech with real-world experience navigating salary and job negotiations. Given that the current climate of the tech job market is competitive and lucrative, there is no better time than now!
Panelists include: Anna Rosenthal - Software Engineer, GitHub Sam Oliver - Lead Recruiter, Curebase Jessica Paoli - Design Engineer, PlanetScale Jenn Walker Wall - Founder and Career Strategist, Work Wonders Careers
Anna Rosenthal is an engineer at GitHub. After graduation, she spent a year in Boston doing research and afterward moved back to NYC and worked at two startups before joining GitHub. Her first salary negotiation was a 50% salary increase and her second salary negotiation - an 80% increase. She gave a talk on salary negotiations at one of her previous employers and considers it her boldest move in a corporate setting to date. For fun, she travels to places with no phone service, and on her way there, lately, she’s been thinking about an unfinished gender revolution and mindful masculinity.
Sam has over seven years experience working in full-cycle recruiting, with 6 of those years growing early stage tech startups. She's negotiated compensation for herself as a contractor, freelancer, and full time basis, as well as for candidates of varied occupations across all seniority levels. She lives in Melrose, MA with her adorable cat, equally adorable 1yo son, and husband (who is also adorable, just not as much as the cat or baby).
Jessica "Skullface" Paoli is a Design Engineer dual wielding compassion and cuteness. She uses her interdisciplinary art, design, and programming background to create and elevate brand and marketing experiences for developer tools. Throughout her career from advertising to media to tech, she's more than 7x-ed her salary without a bachelor’s degree. She lives in Ohio where she plays video games, snuggles her cat, and leaves a trail of glitter in her wake.
Jenn Walker Wall is a resume writer, career coach and founder of Work Wonders Careers where she helps people land new jobs and thrive at work. She’s also the creator of the Uncomplicate Your Job Search Toolkit and Work Words, a digital library of templates and prompts for professionals. Previously, Jenn has worked at the Sloan School of Management at MIT, Harvard University and MGH, and is currently a Lecturer of Sociology at Lesley University.
